The reuse of existing on-site structure systems in the development reduces the impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin and non-renewable resources as well as the impacts of waste diversion to landfill. In addition, the reuse of existing structural systems is evident in buildings of significant historical and architectural interest for conservation and buildings of less significance which nonetheless contribute to the character and urban grain of an area. Existing buildings offer real opportunity and potential for redevelopment and alteration leading to subsequent repurpose and reuse.
